Fourth of July is just around the corner! What’s a more quintessential summer party food than watermelon? Watermelon is on sale this week for $0.17/lb at Sunflower Market, and $2.98 apiece (Friday only) at Safeway.
Here’s some tips for how to choose a good watermelon, and for things to make with it!
When choosing a watermelon, look for one without bruises or soft spots in the rind. Pick up several watermelons and compare their weight: ripe watermelons will be heavy for their size.
Another way to check for ripeness it to look for the light-colored spot where the watermelon sat on the ground — it should be yellowish, not white.
Once you pick the perfect watermelon, how do you plan to use it? Cutting the melon into slices and serving it probably the most popular way to eat this fruit, but it can be used in many other ways as well.
